I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Richard Hartshorn, Assistant Professor of Instructional Technology at UNC-Charlotte. He along with his colleagues at Wake Forest and Purdue University, are conducting a study of MMORPGs (specifically WoW) and citizenship participation.

In an effort to explore parallels between civic leadership and participation in MMORPGs and ‘real-life’, they are conducting a study of the use of guild leaders and guild members of World of Warcraft. This study consists of participants completing a brief (6-12 minute) online, anonymous survey.

Read the Interview and learn more about why this study is being done and what affects it might have in the future of gaming.

For those WoW players who wish to participate in the stduy simply complete the survey. All respondents will be entered into a raffle to win one of a number (3) of gift certificates to Amazon.com or EB Games, or a six month subscription to your favorite MMORPG (Winner’s choice!). To complete the survey, you will first be directed to an Informed Consent form, at the bottom of which is a hyperlink to the survey itself.

Europe: Free Character Migration

Due to population differences between some of the highest and lowest populated PvP realms, the following Free Character Migration will be available from March 12th to March 18th:

From: Burning Legion, Crushridge, Kazzak, Magtheridon, Shadowmoon
To: Auchindoun, Jaedenar

Please note that the migration may be closed at any time should a destination realm’s population rise too high.

Honor and Battleground Holiday Weekends

With the release of patch 2.3.0, players have seen many changes to the way that honor gain occurs in Battlegrounds and most noticeably in Alterac Valley. With these changes has also come some confusion in regard to where honor bonus comes from during holiday weekends as well as how best for players to optimize gaining bonus honor within the battlegrounds. To help clear up this confusion, Blizzard has taken the time to put together more information.

End Of Arena Season

For those wondering when the end will be in Arena, Nethaera from Blizzard had this to share…

We don’t have a date to give yet for the end. We plan to give advance notice, but don’t know how much advance notice we will be able to give.

Keep in mind, ending one season just means the start of the next so if you aren’t having fun, perhaps you might want to change your approach to participating whether it’s a new team or just taking some time off. I’m not saying, “don’t play”. I’m just concerned that you are burning yourself out no matter the length of the season.

No More Down Time!

Well by the looks of things there is going to be alot less downtime with WoW now as they have started completing the weekly maintenance without taking the servers offline.

They are even applying minor patches while the servers are still running, I am pretty sure that when the large patches are released then the realms will have to go down at some point but hey it is all good.

New Hunter Pet Skills

A blizzard poster replied to a post about hunter pet skills with some information about upcoming things such as the ability for hunter pets to have trainable and transferable abilities for their pets. Also, there is mention of the ability to toggle autoshot and autoattack on and off in the interface options.

Burning Crusade Beta Ends

Over at Blizzard EU it seems they are ending the Burning Crusade beta at midnight. Say goodnight…

The Burning Crusade Beta test will end tonight at midnight. To properly mark the occasion, starting this evening around 6 pm there will be a special End of Beta event on the Beta Test Realms. We hope you enjoy it and we thank you all for your hard work during The Burning Crusade Beta test. See you in Outland!
